A Postal Index Number (PIN) is the six-digit code India Post uses to route mail. The first digit identifies the region, the first two the sub-region or postal circle, the third the sorting district, and the last three the specific delivery post office.

A PIN code pins down the exact delivery area, which is a far more precise description of "where" than a locality name — the same locality name often appears in several cities. It also decides your postal address on registration documents, utility connections and loan paperwork.
